Grand Opening Saturday for New Bewdley Arena

 
The Vincent Massey Arena in Bewdley has undergone a complete makeover . The newly re-named Bewdley Community Centre will house the village library ... the local food and clothing bank ... and fully-accessible dressing rooms . Karen Butterley ... who chairs the fund-raising committee ... says  the ice pad and hockey arena have also been renovated .


Multi-Vehicle Crash on 401 at Cobourg

 
Traffic on the eastbound 401 is backed up to Port Hope following a 6-vehicle crash at Burnham Street  The crash just under the Burnham Street overpass involved two tractor trailers . An air ambulance had to land at Northumberland Hills Hospital to help with the injured . Police are directing traffic north on Burnham to Dale Road then east to County Road 45 south of Baltimore and back onto the 401 . Ramps to the eastbound 401 at Burnham are also closed
 

Raising Awareness of Cycling

 
Up to 200 cyclists of all ages take to the streets this weekend in Cobourg to raise awareness of bicycling safety . It's the 2nd annual Bike for the Planet event ... a two-hour 13 k ride through residential streets . Rick Nonnekes of Sustainable Cobourg says the aim is to promote cycling as a safe ... clean and healthy form of recreation so others will take it up
 

Lakers Host The Mann Cup!  Bring On The Salmonbellies! 
 

4 thousand fans jammed the Memorial centre last night to see the Peterborough Lakers get by Brampton 11-9 and advance to the Mann cup Canadian lacrosse championship final.
Peterborough will host the best of seven championship against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
It starts Friday night at the Memorial Centre. 
Game two is Saturday night.
 
 
Back to School Means Big Bucks
 
It's as traditional as Labour Day:  Parents and students scrambling to get last minute supplies for the first day of school.
Families of shoppers hit the malls in the region over the weekend (including Northumberland Mall on Monday) to stock up for the return to class.
By the numbers--here's what Canadians spend annually on back to school materials. 
According to the last census,  220 million is spent on back to school clothing for boys;  237 million for girls. 
Almost a billion dollars is spent annually on back to school stationary and other school supplies.
 
 
Slow Down In Cobourg School Zones!
 
Cobourg police and police everywhere will step up traffic enforcement for back to school.
Constable Terry Stanley says motorists should keep an eye out for children walking or cycling to and from school  and slow down.
Police say motorists, who don't stop for school buses with flashing red lights and stop arm extended, are liable for a 500 dollar fine and 6 demerit points.
 
 
New Principals At The KPR District School Board
 
The Kawartha Pine Ridge district school board has announced a number of principal and vice principal appointments for the new school year.
At the elementary level, the new principal at Edmison Heights public school is Stephen Fisher.  Karen Duke is the new principal at Waverly Public school.
New vice principals at Peterborouigh Collegiate are Paul Doig and Marc Gagne.  The new principal at Kenner Collegiate is Alison Sadowski. 
 
 
Brand New Northumberland School Opens
 
A brand new school opens it doors for the first time today in Castleton.
The new Northumberland Hills Public School will house students from the existing Castleton and South Cramahe Public Schools.

 
Public Apathy Over Police
 
Hamilton Township's Police Services Board is holding public meetings to get input on O-P-P protection.
The Township is required by provincial law to update its police business plan every 3 years.
But, Councillor Gary Woods says attendance so far has been absymal.
Woods says two more public meetings are scheduled Thursday afternoon in Bewdley and Thursday evening in Harwood.
 
 
Weekend Crash Victim Identified
 
A Cobourg man died in a head on collision north of Port Hope on Saturday. 
Provincial police say a car travelling southbound on County Road 28 pulled out into a northbound lane and collided with a cargo truck just before 1 oclock.
The driver of the car, Richard Brown of Cobourg, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.  County road 28 was closed for 8 hours following the collision.
 
 
Leave Of Absence For Cobourg Pastor
 
The Cobourg Pastor at the centre of a controversy involving a gay altar server has taken a leave of absence.
Father Alan Hood of St . Michaels Parish had been under pressure by a group of parishioners to bar a gay man from serving Holy Communion.
The case went to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, but was settled quietly.
 
 
A GO Station Closer To Reality For Peterborough
 
The City of Peterborough is looking to buy close to 8-acres off Harper Road, to build new access roads for a future GO Train Station.
It will cost the City 1-million dollars to make the purchase.
The land is located beside a 20-acre portion of city owned land, where a proposed GO Train Station or transit hub would be built.
 
 
Del Mastro And Rail Plans In Peterborough
 
Peterborough M-P Dean del-Mastro has invited municipal and business leaders to another conference on rail transportation.
Del Mastro says Thursday's meeting will discuss a not-for-profit railway authority to oversee freight transportation along the Peterborough-Toronto rail corridor.


Peterborough United Way Goal Unveiled Tomorrow!
 
The United Way of Peterborough kicks off it's 69th annual campaign on Wednesday.
C-E-O Heather Zak says with a good team in place, expectations are high.
Zak says the campaign goal will be announced at the kick-off breakfast.


Another H4H Build Starts In October
 
Habitat for Humanity Northumberland will start its next build in Port Hope in October.
A special ground breaking ceremony is set for Friday at noon at the site of the former Doctor L-B Powers school on Harcourt Street.
The build is set to start on October 12th and run until mid November.
 
 
Art Gallery Welcomes New Curator
 
It's the first day on the job for the new curator at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
Carla Garnet was a guest curator of the recent gallery exhibit called Ladies Sasquatch.
She's known for actively supporting Canadian contemporary art, culture and artists through several initiatives

New Cougars Team Takes to the Ice

The Cobourg Cougars open their regular season Thursday night in Kingston . The Cougars and the former Bowmanville Eagles have merged to form a single franchise . Team owner Mark Mercier says Cobourg will keep alive the Bowmanville tradition .
